What Exactly Are Eco-Friendly Products?

In today's world, the issue of plastic waste has reached critical proportions, threatening the environment and ecosystems. As a conscientious individual, you want to seek eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastics. Fortunately, innovative solutions are emerging, paving the way for a sustainable future.

Cibowares has so many wonderful eco-friendly options available, from plant fiber tableware to bamboo chopsticks and no added PFAS takeout boxes. But what is it about these products that makes them eco-friendly? Keep reading to find out what makes our selection of eco-friendly products so unique and functional.

Overview of Traditional Plastics

Traditional plastics, such as polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), have become ubiquitous. These materials are derived from fossil fuels, primarily petroleum and natural gas. The raw materials are transformed through polymerization into a wide range of plastic products we use daily.

Traditional plastics may offer convenience, but this comes at a high cost. For example, plastic waste consists of up to 80% of aquatic pollution. This severely threatens marine life, as animals often mistake plastic debris for food, leading to entanglement and ingestion. The environmental impact of traditional plastics has become a global crisis, demanding urgent action.

Eco-Friendly Alternative Materials

Cibowares offers some alternatives to products made from standard plastic materials. For example, we have regular sized cutlery made from wood, plant starch-based plastic and compostable CPLA. Takeout containers are a product that can easily be made more environmentally friendly by using molded fiber as their material instead polystyrene (plastic foam). We even have options that have no added PFAS for the ultimate eco-friendly choice. Lets take a quick look at the different types of materials we use that are green alternatives to plastic:

Molded Fiber

Molded fiber, also known as molded pulp, is a sustainable material made from recycled plant fibers, and other cellulose-based materials. Molded fiber is renowned for being the most common choice for a compostable takeout alternative. Some Molded fiber products have a PFAS lining to add additional moisture resistance, but we're quickly moving away from those products with our No added PFAS line from Primeware.

Bioplastics

Bioplastics are eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastics that are derived from renewable sources such as plants, algae, or bacteria. They offer a promising solution to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste. Bioplastics can be recycled in some areas, but even when they cannot be recycled, bioplastics can greatly reduce the use of non-renewable resources. Some bioplastics such as PLA and CPLA are 100% compostable - leaving no harmful microplastics behind.

Plant-Based Materials

Plant-based materials are derived from renewable plant sources such as corn, sugarcane, and algae. Plant-based materials have a lower carbon footprint compared to petroleum-based plastics. They require less energy and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions during production.

Plant-based materials are non-toxic and do not release harmful chemicals when they decompose. This makes them safer for both human health and the environment. We use plant-based materials for many of our products including straws, disposable cutlery, and packaging.

Recycled Plastics

Recycled plastics are created by collecting used plastic products, such as bottles, containers, and packaging, and processing them to develop new plastic materials. This process helps reduce the amount of plastic waste in landfills and oceans while conserving valuable resources.

These materials significantly reduce the demand for new plastic production, which requires the extraction of fossil fuels and energy-intensive manufacturing processes. Using eco-friendly plastic contributes to the conversation of natural resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Using recycled plastics promotes a circular economy, where products are designed to be recycled and reused. This reduces the reliance on single-use plastics and encourages a more sustainable approach to plastic consumption.

Cellulosic Fibers

Cellulosic Fibers are the newest innovation from our eco-friendly Primeware line of products. Cellulosic products are crafted from sustainably sourced wood pulp and recycled content. Cellulosic products have the look and feel of plastic, are crystal-clear and are backyard compostable! Seeing is believing, check out our new cellulosic straws!

Invest in High-Quality Compostable and Eco-Friendly Supplies

The environmental toll of traditional plastics is undeniable, with devastating impacts on marine life and ecosystems. However, amidst these challenges, there is hope on the horizon. Cibowares stands at the forefront of this movement, offering a diverse array of eco-friendly options, from plant fiber tableware to innovative cellulosic fibers. These alternatives represent more than just a shift in materials—they signify a commitment to a sustainable future. By embracing molded fiber, bioplastics, plant-based materials, recycled plastics, and cellulosic fibers, we are not only reducing our reliance on fossil fuels but also promoting a circular economy where waste is minimized, and resources are conserved. Together, we can make a tangible difference in preserving our planet for future generations.
